Classic Album: Neil Young – Harvest

Neil Young’s distinctive sound and identity is a little bit country, and a little bit rock n’ roll, but his life story is definitely more of a ballad than a Sing-A-Long Old man look at my life, I’m a lot like you were. Since cruising into Los Angeles and helping form Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young has had a long, twisting and frequently brilliant career in the rock and roll spotlight. And much to his credit, Young has always taken the road less traveled, railing against the streamlined conventions and proven formulas. He dives, not dips, himself into his various sounds and projects — equally at home strumming an acoustic guitar in a dimly lit room, harmonizing for stadium crowds with CSNY, or rocking in the free world with his raging Crazy Horse.

He wrote over 30 books in his career, amongst others the schoolboy favorite, Scrubs on Skates. His mother, Rassy, appeared in the quiz show Twenty Questions while they lived in Winnipeg. His dad also appeared in a game show, although Neil never did.

You might find our gradings are lower than our competitors – that’s because if a record looks fantastic but plays terribly we will grade it low on the scale, whereas others may grade it very highly because visually they look good. For that reason, when we grade records equivalently they actually sound the same, so you know exactly what to expect. We’re so confident of our grading process that we offer free returns for any reason. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition.

Excellent: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening of sound quality. Very Good: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable. Good: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches.

The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration etc.

Neil Young’s ‘Harvest’: Keep Me Searching

Neil Young was always old. You’d sooner imagine him emerging fully formed from slabs of Dakota granite than as a cooing baby with flesh and blood parents. Technically, there’s contradictory evidence.

Young’s Harvest, which included the well-known singles “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man,” was the best-selling album of that year. “Heart of.

September 24, In the early s, rock was getting heavier, glamourised or more progressive and complex. For a few, however, it was the stripped back and traditional sounds of folk and blues that still offered a medium for the rawest emotion. In , the folk supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young went their separate ways. He followed with an extensive solo acoustic tour and, in January of , returned to his hometown, Toronto , to play a now legendary show at the Massey Hall. In his prolific nature , Young had been constantly writing while on tour.

He proceeded to deliver his new songs to the awestruck spectators, a potent combination of the now-classics, Heart of Gold and Needle and the Damage Done , amongst others. Within two weeks of the concert he laid down the first parts for these seminal tracks, and within a few short months Harvest was completed and released on Reprise Records in The majority of the electric guitar was recorded in a barn on his California ranch, before recording in London with the London Symphony Orchestra.

The producer Elliot Mazer, hosted an after party for the musicians, where he and Neil started talking. A converted Victorian-era house, the space was cosy and homey, utilising its living room for recording. In terms of collaborators, Young already had people in mind and he made the decision to start straight away. All he needed was a small group of players, just bass, drums, and steel.

Mazer scrambled to get the talent; he found the drummer Kenny Buttrey, bassist Tim Drummond and steel guitarist Ben Keith.

On June 19, Neil Young, the year-old Canadian-born singer-songwriter, released a new album entitled Homegrown on his long-time label, Reprise Records. Homegrown is unusual in that Young recorded it in and , but never released it until now. In an earlier interview, Young explained that Homegrown was held back because it was recorded during the protracted breakup of his relationship with the late actress Carrie Snodgress — , the mother of his first child, Zeke Young. The damage done.

The heartache. I wanted to move on. He has had, throughout his career, an apparently limitless supply of attractive lyrical and musical ideas, even if they have sometimes emerged from the darker side of his psyche. Young uses uncomplicated pop musical forms and riffs. His lyrics are straightforward, only occasionally drifting into dreamlike—or possibly drug-induced—imagery, never penetrating too deeply or straying into a metaphorical treatment of the subject matter.

Young became individually prominent through his collaboration with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash beginning in Before a week had passed it was all over the radio. It was really fast for those times; really fast. With record sales dwindling and his career looking to industry executives like it was failing, Young emerged reincarnated as a blues man in a band called the Bluenotes in

Neil Young got to be one of the most, if not the most, gruesomely overrated solo artists in rock music. He seems to be the love and pride of every music critic – alive and dead, and, at first glance, he deserves it.

70 Facts You Might Not Know About Neil Young

Probably not. For his fourth solo offering, Young followed in the same direction as AtG. And since his last album was a top 10 hit, he already knew going into the sessions that there was a large audience primed and ready.

Few, if any, major artists in the rock pantheon have been as celebrated, as influential, and as thoroughly idiosyncratic as Neil Young. Since he left Buffalo Springfield to go out on his own in , Young has famously followed his muse in unpredictable directions, rarely employing the same musical template for two albums in a row and often presenting an entirely different musical statement by the time he gets around to touring behind a new LP. The constants in Young’s catalog are few, but they’re strong: the quality of his songwriting, which ranks with Bob Dylan for depth and emotional power; his commitment to spontaneous creation that values honesty and passion over technique; and the force of his guitar work, introspective in his acoustic work and roaring in his electric performances, especially with Crazy Horse.

His two dominant styles have been gentle folk and country-rock best typified by ‘s After the Gold Rush and ‘s Harvest , and crushingly loud electric guitar rock ‘s Ragged Glory and the second half of ‘s Rust Never Sleeps represent this facet at its peak. But he’s just as likely to detour into jam-friendly rock ‘s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , ragged blues-rock ‘s Tonight’s the Night , electronics ‘s Trans , rockabilly ‘s Everybody’s Rockin’ , straight-ahead country ‘s Old Ways , politically themed concept albums ‘s Greendale and ‘s Living with War , and lo-fi interpretive sessions of songs from the past ‘s Americana and ‘s A Letter Home.

Despite his enormous catalog and influence, Young continues to move forward, writing new songs and exploring new music. His restless spirit has ensured that he’s one of the few rock veterans as vital in his old age as he was in his youth, still making fresh sounds and challenging his audience more than 50 years into his career. Born in Toronto, Canada, Neil Young moved to Winnipeg with his mother following her divorce from his sports journalist father.
